La Russa (still) wants a slugger

Manager Tony La Russa told mlb.com that he expects the Cardinals front office to go out and get a slugger to protect Albert Pujols in the batting order.





He told Matthew Leach that the Cardinals both have the money and the trading chips they need to get a deal done. And he hinted his preference is Oakland slugger Matt Holliday, who the team reportedly was close to acquiring from Colorado over the winter before the deal fell through.

La Russa was interested more than anything last off season in a slugger, and he seems to have been proven correct as the Cardinals struggle to push across runs and Pujols racks up the intentional walks.
