Wins and losses in exhibition games don't count in the standings. But it's gotta mean at least a little something in the confidence department for the Cardinals to defeat the powerful Dominican Republic World Baseball Classic team.
Even without Albert Pujols, the Dominican squad boasts Jose Reyes, Miguel Tejada, David Ortiz, Jose Guillen and Moises Alou amongst its batsmen. That all star squad mustered only one run in four innings against Cardinals starter Todd Wellemeyer and then was shut out the rest of the way by Ryan Franklin (two innings), Chris Perez (one inning), Josh Kinney (one inning) and Jason Motte (one inning.)
Skip Schumaker was 2-2 at the plate. Brendan Ryan was 0-2 at the dish but scored a pair of runs. Colby Rasmus, who has struggled at the plate and in the field so far this year, was 1-2 at the dish on the day Mike Shannon said on the radio that if he didn't improve his play Rasmus would end up spending the season in "Keokuk."
