Rich Hill wasn't unemployed for long.
Just days after the Cardinals released him from their Class AAA squad in Memphis, the Red Sox have inked him to a minor league deal and sent the southpaw to their top minor league team in Pawtucket.
Hill was 4-3 with a 4.30 ERA in Memphis where he had been pitching out of the bullpen following his failure to win the fifth spot in the Cardinals rotation during spring training. Despite the fact that the Birds have been without their regular fourth and fifth starters for the better part of a month, Hill couldn't crack the major league roster in St. Louis.
From Milton, Mass., Hill still has a good curve which he used to give minor league hitters fits -- when he could get it over the plate. Control, which was his downfall in previous big league stints with the Cubs and the Orioles, continues to be Hill's undoing.
