Trying to do spring training on a budget makes driving instead of flying a necessity. But I have to admit that I hate the mind numbingly long trek to Jupiter every bit as much as I enjoy sitting in the Florida sun watching spring games.
Things were going a little to well for my comfort level as we cruised along through Kentucky and into Tennessee. When we got past Nashville at lunchtime, I wondered aloud if maybe I was too conservative in making a hotel reservation in Macon, Ga. before I left home. Maybe I would just drive all the way through. At the pace I was going, i could have been in Orlando by midnight...
And then we hit a traffic jam just north of Chattanooga, Tenn., the origin of which I have still not determined. When we got to the end of the congestion there was no accident, no construction barricades. But it took more than an hour to cover eight miles.
So much for driving through. I was lucky to pull into the hotel at Macon with my sanity -- a full 15 hours after I left the metro-east.
But, on the bright side, I'm two-thirds of the way to my destination. Hopefully Saturday will be a little less tense.
