Those who think that the Cardinals gave up too much to get Matt Holliday can breathe at least a little bit easier.
One of the pieces Oakland got in the deal, starting pitcher Clayton Mortensen was called up by the Athletics to start Saturday night against the lowly Royals... And he was plastered for eight hits and eight earned runs over four innings to get tagged with the loss.
Mortensen actually had a 3-0 lead after two innings. But he gave up two runs in the third, four in the sixth and was responsible for two more in the fifth.
The former Cardinals farmhand made his major league debut with St. Louis June 29 in a three inning outing against the Giants. He gave up five hits and six runs but only two of them were earned.
In his brief major league history, Mortensen has had a problem has had a problem with giving up the long ball. He gave up one for the Cardinals and had surrendered two more with the A's to total three in seven innings pitched.
