Cardinals catcher yadier Molina is out for the rest of spring training, manager Tony La Russa told NBC on Thursday.
The skipper told NBC.com that whether Molina will be ready by the time the games start to count is still up in the air. "We have our fingers crossed for the early part of the season, maybe Opening Day," La Russa said.
The Cardinals are relatively shallow in the backstopper department. They have veteran Jason LaRue at the major league level. But it's debatable how long he can go as the everyday catcher with as many miles on the odometer as LaRue has clocked. The next guy on the depth chart is Matt Pagnozzi, a good receiver but not much of a hitter.
It would have been nice if former bigtime prospect Bryan Anderson could have stepped up and taken the slack. But, after his injury plagued 2009 season, Anderson was never given a serious look this spring. It's doubtfull he'll get the call if Molina is out for an extended period of time.
