The Cardinals have optioned infielder Jarrett Hoffpauir and outfielder Nick Stavinoha to Class AAA Memphis.
It's a bit of a surprise that Hoffpauir seemingly never got a chance to compete for the open second base job or to man third base until Troy Glaus comes back from shoulder surgery. He only got 18 at bats before he was shipped out. But in that limited playing time, he managed a .333 batting average with a double, three walks and no strikeouts. Why put the guy on the 40-man roster if he really wasn't going to get a chance to make the big club?

Stavinoha had nearly identical numbers with a .333 batting averages in 18 ABs. Even with Joe Mather at third base and Skip Schumaker spending almost all his playing time at second base, Stavinoha couldn't get the at bats to try to win a reserve outfielder job.
