The Cardinals have announced that they have picked up Albert Pujols' option for 2011.
It comes as no surprise. Now the team has the best player in baseball in the fold for another year at $16 million, or about 65 percent of what Philadelphia's Ryan Howard is getting to do the same job at a lower performance level.
Obviously, I am glad that Pujols will be back for at least one more year. But I am disappointed that the Cardinals haven't at least tried to work out a long-term deal with him up to this point.
At some point the club is going to have to address the elephant standing in the middle of the room. And I am beginning to become concerned that the front office is going to procrastinate their way out of getting something done before Pujols can walk as a free agent...
