We hear all the time about good trades and bad trades that have happened. But today I am especially thankful for a bad trade that didn't happen.
It was a year ago that the Braves were trying to get the Cardinals to send them outfielder Ryan Ludwick for second baseman Kelly Johnson. Today the Braves non-tendered Johnson, making him a free agent, after he suffered through a disastrous 2009 season.
Johnson hit .224 with eight homers and 29 RBI in 106 games last year for Atlanta, losing his starting second base job in the process. He ended up in the outfield. But those are some pretty awful numbers for what is traditionally a power spot in the batting order. Ludwick hit .265 with 22 homers with 97 RBIs.
The Cardinals could sure use a left fielder right about now. But how much worse would things be if they needed a right fielder, too.
