The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Reds expect to sign former Cardinals closer Jason Isringhausen today.
Izzy said on the radio Monday morning that it would be weird for him to pitch against the Cardinals -- the team he grew up in Brighton rooting for. But, apparently, a deal from Cincinnati was his best offer.
It would have been tough for the Redbirds to bring back Izzy even if they did have a spot open in the bullpen. It would be uncomfortable for incumbent closer Ryan Franklin when everyone in the ballpark knew Izzy, the all-time Cardinals saves leader, wants desperately to hang on until he reaches the 300 save mark. He currently has 293 and he hasn't notched one since 2008 with St. Louis.
Besides, if the Birds signed Izzy, then Randy Winn would have to find a different number and everything. It would just be a hassle.
