Holliday doesn't want to negotiate before season's end

According to a story on CBS Sportsline, Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday is having a swell time on his first date in St. Louis.

But he isn't exactly ready to settle down and go steady.

"I like it here," Holliday told CBS Sportsline's Scott Miller. "Obviously, the team is good and competitive. The guys on the team seem like they're a really great bunch of guys. It's got a lot of the things I'm interested in."

His house in Denver is currently on the market. Right now, as he says, he's simply "hanging out." He hasn't yet decided where he will establish permanent residence. Maybe in the city where he signs his next long-term contract. "Possibly," he says, indicating he'll wait and see what happens with the game and in the market this winter.

He smiles when asked how hard his new teammates in St. Louis are lobbying for him to stay right where he is for a few years. Yes, he acknowledges, the lobbying already has begun "in passing."

But he also says that he is doing his best to put off thoughts on the future until the appropriate time.

"I think I owe it to the guys in here and to the staff to focus on winning every game," says Holliday, and mission accomplished, so far. "I want to keep focusing on that. All the other stuff, there will be plenty of time for."

Click here to read the entire article. If you read between the lines, it sounds less like Holliday wants to hold out for top dollar than it seems like he doesn't want to be distracted from the task at hand.

I am hopeful that the Cardinals will put away the division title with a couple of weeks to go before the end of the season so that Holliday and agent Scott Boras might be able to see if they can hammer something out before the end of the season ala Mark McGwire...

Not only do the Cardinals desperately need their new star back. But it is important to know what Holliday is going to do so the Cardinals can plot out the rest of their off-season. The other dominos -- Mark DeRosa, Joel Pineiro, Rick Ankiel to name a few, won't fall into place until the Birds know what it's going to take to bring back Holliday... Or IF they will be able to bring him back.
