Former Cardinals swingman Brad Thompson is without a job after being released by the Astros organization.
Thompson started the season with Kansas City but refused to accept a minor league assignment when the club tried to demote him in June. He signed a minor league deal with Houston but was largely terrible with an ERA of 8.47.
He wasn't much better with the Royals where Thompson posted an 0-4 record and a 6.41 ERA in 19 2/3 innings pitched.
In parts of five seasons with the Cardinals, the right-hander was 21-17 with a 4.36 ERA. He made 185 appearances with the Cardinals, 32 of them as a starter.
Hopefully Thompson can get straightened out and find himself another opportunity in 2011. It's not very likely a guy who is released in August from his Class AAA contract is going to be able to hook on in a place where he can have much of an impact this season.
