Former Cardinals closer John Smoltz is getting some attention from the Twins, who recently lost closer Joe Nathan for the season with a torn ligament in his elbow.
Smoliz is an established finisher. But the Cardinals reportedly were concerned that he can't pitch frequently enough to be a closer or eighth inning guy because of his ongoing battle with tendonitis in his pitching shoulder.
Beyond that, the question is would Smoltz be willing to be a reliever? He supposedly chose the Cardinals last season over other options because of the team's willingness to use him in the rotation, Smoltz also fared much better against National League hitters in 2009 than he did against American League batsmen.
