As they consider the possibility of having to find a replacement starter for Todd Wellemeyer, I wonder if Brandon Backe has caught the interest of Cardinals brass.
Backe was released by the Astros last week and seems to fit the mold of a pitcher with good stuff but mediocre results that pitching coach Dave Duncan likes to tinker with... But Backe has a history of bad blood with St. Louis superstar Albert Pujols.
Would Pujols, the consumate team player, put aside hard feelings and accept Backe. Or would the addition of an agitator only mess up team chemistry? The Pujols/Backe feud is based in Backe accusing Pujols of a dirty hit on the Astros catcher a couple of years back during a play at the plate.
Pujols apologized for the awkward collision, then fumed when Backe wouldn't let if go, confronting the former Astros hurler on the field at Minute Maid Park. Questioning a person's integrity causes the sort of hard feelings that are hard to let go of.
If the Cardinals aren't interested in Backe, they may be interested in another team that is. According to mlb.com, the NL Central leading Milwaukee Brewers are kicking the tires on Backe as we speak.
