Cardinals third baseman David Freese re-injured his ankle in a minor league rehab game Monday at Class AA Springfield.
After a long layoff already, his availablility for the rest of the season is certainly in doubt.
Freese injured the ankle running the bases. He started the game as designated hitter and had one hit in two at bats before the setback.
I was looking forward to Freese's return both for his righty bat to help offset the loss of Ryan Ludwick to trade -- and also to improve the defense at third base where Felipe Lopez has struggled lately with the leather.
On Monday Lopez had a ball go between his legs on what would have been the third out of an inning with runners on base.
