According to the Bergen Record, John Smoltz is "leaning toward" a return to the Cardinals over signing with the Mets.
That's apparently news to the Redbirds. The front office seems decidedly uncommitted to the future Hall of Famer if, for no other reason, it seems he doesn't fit the team's financial picture.
I would guess the Birds couldn't put more than $2-$2.5 million together for Smoltz who reportedly wants at least twice that.
With Sean Hill, Ben Jukich, Jaime Garcia, Mitchell Boggs and Kyle McClellan fighting over the fifth spot in the St. Louis rotation, I would prefer to see the Cardinals use their remaining resources to do something with their very weak bench.
The team needs to find an infielder to push David Freese at third base -- or possibly replace him if the untested infielder can't hold his own with the bat -- and an outfielder who can play all three outfield positions. One of those guys -- or an additional player -- is needed to be the primary pinch hitter.
