In a mild surprise, the Cardinals have named Adam Wainwright their opening day starter Monday against the Pirates.
Wainwright is certainly worthy of it. But when you have Chris Carpenter, the 2005 Cy Young Award winner on the roster and healthy, you'd think the ace would get the ball when the bell rang.
Maybe the Cardinals are hoping to avoid a repeat of opening day 2007 when Carpenter toed the rubber following the raising of the 2006 World Series pennant and proceeded to blow out his arm and earn nearly two years on the disabled list in the process.
Hopefully this isn't a sign that Carpenter isn't ready or that he has had a health setback. The Cardinals don't have the depth to do without him this season.
