With the way the Cardinals have struggled to score runs lately, it was nice to see them uncork the offense against one of the best pitchers in baseball, Justin Verlander. After Adam Wainwright struggled to get through the first, he settled down. Then the Birds scored four in their half of the initial frame and were well on their way to an 11-2 win.
Hopefully the team didn't use up all its firepower in one shot!
Cardinals Star of the Game: Wainwright, who threw seven innings and allowed six hits and a run. But a tip of the Cheap Seats Cap goes to Chris Duncan and Skip Schumaker who each collected eix hits. Duncan added his fifth homer of the season...
Lowlight: It looked like the Cardinals would be off to a bad start when Colby Rasmus got caught in between on a liner to center. He may have caught it if he reacted immediately. He would have almost surely been able to limit the damage to a single if he played it conservatively. Indecision caused Rasmus to pull up at the last minute and the ball rolled to the wall for a triple... But Wainwright was able to weave his way through the powerful Detroit lineup without allowing a run.
