ESPN's Buster Olney reports than former Oakland GM Sandy Alderson wants to become the next general manager of the Mets.
According to the report, that makes Alderson a favorite for the job since he and Mets owner Fred Wilpon are friends. MSNBC reports that Alderson may have already been told that he's going to get the job.
What's this mean to the Cardinals? Well, Alderson was running Oakland's front office when La Russa was the manager there and they teamed up for three American League pennants and a World Series title... Could La Russa be stalling the Cardinals because he's waiting to see what happens in New York.
The argument against La Russa managing the Mets is that they don't really seem to be a playoff contender and he's in the twilight of his career. But it's amazing how quickly things can turn around when you have the resources of a large market. A couple of trades and some well placed free agent signings and you're back in the thick of things before you know it.
If La Russa is high on the Mets chances it probably means he has lost some faith in the Cardinals ability to compete. Or that he has at least lost his influence over the way the ball club will be composed.
I would be terrified as a Cardinals fan if La Russa goes to the Mets. The Mets are one of the few teams that has the financial resources and room at first base to make a run at signing Albert Pujols when he becomes a free agent.
Even if he is unhappy in St. Louis, I'm not sure it's going to be a bed of roses if La Russa goes to the Mets. He has a prickly enough time dealing with the relatively tame and understanding St. Louis media. How is he going to like being questioned -- if not mocked -- on the pages of the New York Post throughout the year?
