Could the Cardinals be interested in Red Sox pitcher John Smoltz, who was recently designated for assignment on his way to being released or traded.
GM John Mozeliak told the Springfield, Mo. News-Leader no when interviewed on the subject while watching Cardinals Class AA farmhands there Friday. But then he added "Things can change."
Smoltz, who was 2-5 with an 8.33 ERA in eight starts since returning from arm troubles, has struggled mightily. But could the Cardinals hope that as he builds his arm strength and gets his legs underneath him that he would make a better fifth starter than Todd Wellemeyer or Mitchell Boggs?
Or could Smoltz, who has had a successful carerr as a bullpenner, be that righthanded set up man the Cardinals searched in vain for before the trade deadline.
That could be a win-win situation as Smoltz tunes up with less wear and tear on his arm and the Cardinals add some depth where they need it the most.
