Cardinals first round supplemental draft pick Tyrell Jenkins has said that he has decided to forego going to Baylor University this fall where he had a football scholarship to play professional baseball instead.
"I wake up and think baseball, then go to bed and dream baseball, I am just ready to get started," Jenkins told Tyler Texas television station KLTV "I just want to jump right in and show them what I have, a small town kid, and show them that kids from Texas can play."
Jenkins said he plans to report to Class A Johnson City, Tenn. sometime next week.
A 6-foot-4, 180-pound righthander, Jenkins throws a power sinker and a slider. He was reported by scouts his junior year of high school to have a 91-92 MPH fastball. But this spring scouts said he was up to the 94-95 MPH mark.
