As we headed for the All-Star break a rumor emerged that the Cardinals were one of several teams thought to be talking with Toronto for pitching and/or middle infield help.
Unfortunately, as we emerge from the break, it has been revealed that the Cardinals won't be getting Toronto shortstop Alex Gonzalez and his 17 home runs. He'll instead head for Atlanta along with lefty pitcher Tim Collins and infielder Tyler Pastronicky in a swap that sends Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar, starting pitcher Jo Jo Reyes north of the border.
I wouldn't have minded seeing EITHER shortstop involved in this deal manning the middle of the infield in St. Louis. But it would have been hard for the Cardinals to compete with the package of Escobar and Reyes.
