The Pirates have completed a deal to bring Ryan Church aboard.
Church, a lefty hitting and strong fielding outfielder who has played for the Braves and Mets was thought to be a potential target of the Cardinals as a fourth outfielder. But in Pittsburgh he'll have a chance to battle for a starting job in spring training which gives him a better change to build his reputation and get a larger contract in the future.
Meanwhile, St. Louis free agent pitcher Joel Pineiro continues to talk with the Mets about a contract. And now the Dodgers have become involved in the bidding, too.
The Dodgers don't have much to spend because their payroll is frozen thanks to the contentious divorce of owner Frank McCourt. But Los Angeles lost Randy Wolf to the Brewers in a $31-million deal for three years so they can use a replacement.
