It appears that the Cardinals will place Brendan Ryan on the disabled list and give Tyler Greene, once expected to be the heir to David Eckstein as Redbird shortstop, his first crack at the majors.
Ryan, who had been getting a lot of playing time lately because his excellent glove work, pulled a hamstring while running out a foul ball. Cardinals starting shortstop Khalil Greene has a strained forearm and was already on the shelf.

Tyler Greene was hitting .296 in Class AAA Memphis with a pair of homers and an RBI. He has seven stolen bases in 19 games. Overall, he has been in the Cardinals minor league system since 2005 with a .256 batting average, 49 homers and 89 stolen bases in 396 games.
