With the trade deadline drawing near, the pitching challenged Brewers are said to be trying to pick up Seattle's Jarrod Washburn, a hurler who was supposedly on the Cardinals radar a year ago.
While the Cardinals are dipping into the farm system, maybe they should kick Washburn's tires. Not only would they add a quality arm in the place of the mightily struggling Todd Wellemeyer. But they would keep him out of the clutches of the pitching deprived Brewers.
The Mariners are said to want a shortstop for the veteran moundsman and J.J. Hardy is on the menu. He's hitting .231 with 11 homers and 43 RBI. I wonder if Tyler Greene would have any appeal... Or Peter Kozma who is hitting .219 in Class AA Springfield after a fast, .315 start at Advanced Class A Palm Beach.
Brendan Ryan has seemingly seized the shortstop job in St. Louis with Julio Lugo now in house as the veteran insurance policy in 2010.
Washburn is 8-6 for a Seattle team mired in third place. He has a sparkling 2.71 ERA and 78 strikeouts against 30 walks in 126 innings pitched.
