In an addition by subtraction move, the Cardinals have told Felipe Lopez to beat it.
The team told the versatile infielder with the glove of iron that his services will no longer be needed and he was sent home for the rest of the season.
How much of a clubhouse cancer does one have to be to have the club tell him to go away when rosters are expanded to 40 men and there are two weeks left in the season?
I was excited about bringing back Flip at the start of the season. He was a top 10 hitter for average in the National League last season and I thought he could provide some much needed help for the top of the order. He was basically handed the leadoff job when Skip Schumaker sputtered at the beginning of the year. But he moped his way to a .230 something batting average because he was playing multiple positions instead of being anointed the starter at any one of them.
Lopez had a chance to get tons of at bats and play for a winning team. But he turned out to be the quitter in chief on a team that drastically underperformed.
The dude played some of the most spectacularly awful defense I have ever seen. And then he pounted because he thinks he deserves a multi-year, multi-million-dollar contract?
See you in the funny papers, Lopez.
