It looks like embattled Tigers pitcher Dontrelle Willis might not make the open market after all.
A report in the Arizona Republic says that the Diamondbacks are interested in the lefty and believe several other teams might like him, too. So, Arizona is trying to work out a trade with Detroit that would prevent Willis from being put through waivers.
If Willis was waived, the Arizona Republic lists the Diamondbacks as a team that the wayward pitcher would like to play for. And it would make a lot of sense. Arizona has a pretty good, young pitching staff which would allow Willis to settle in somewhere at the back end of the rotation and try to rediscover his magic with relatively little pressure.
If the Cardinals were interested in Willis, they ought to be able to swing a deal with the Tigers. Something along the lines of a "why don't you give us Willis for free and we'll forget about the whole Mike Maroth deal" sounds about right to me.
