Calero signs with Mets

The Mets have announced that they signed former Cardinals reliever Kiko Calero.

A very effective reliever throughout his career, Calero has lingered on the market because he struggled with shoulder problems last year and teams seemed to be afraid that he was too much of a risk.

The deal with New York is worth $850,000 in base salary plus Calero has a chance to make another $650,000 in incentives.

Now 35 years old, Calero has a 3.24 lifetime ERA. He was spectacular last season in Florida with a 1.95 ERA in 67 appearances for the Marlins. But he only made it into five games in 2008 because of his arm woes.

Major League Baseball players who are tired of not getting big money contracts from teams during the offseason should start their own sports league similar to the Players League formed in the 1890s.
