The Diamondbacks have inked Dominican outfield prospect Wagner Mateo to a contract, according to the Arizona Republic.
Mateo is the kid the Cardinals thought was a can't miss prospect a year ago when they gave him one of the largest bonuses for an under 18 Latin American player -- $3.1 million. But St. Louis GM John Mozeliak later voided the deal after Mateao had a physical because of concerns about the player's eyes.
Arizona paid only $512,000 for Mateo who failed to draw serious interest from other teams. His representatives claim that while Mateo has 20/30 vision, he does not have a degenerative eye problem and that he managed to impress scouts with his hitting ability as is.
