In a move that could have playoff implications for the Cardinals, Atlanta is reported to be close to a deal for Cubs first baseman Derek Lee.
Lee would seem to offer a jolt to Atlanta's struggling offense. After all, he looked like the second coming of Babe Ruth over the weekend in St. Louis. But the move isn't expected to solve the Braves' problem of finding a replacement in the field for Chipper Jones.
According to Fox Sports, the Braves don't think current first baseman -- and former Cardinals third baseman -- Troy Glaus is capable of playing third anymore. Glaus, who missed almost all of last season with a shoulder injury, had problems last season throwing the ball all the way across the infield.
The Braves are currently in first place in the National League East. But they could be a factor for the Cardinals in the wild card race. The surging Phillies have moved within 2 1/2 games of Atlanta for the division lead. Philadelphia currently leads the wild card derby, 1 1/2 games ahead of the Cardinals and one game ahead of San Francisco.
