The Cardinals say that Mitchell Boggs is not a likely candidate to win the fifth starter's job.
That is probably an indication that Kyle McClellan is the favorite for the position. If, according to pitching coach Dave Duncan, Boggs is playing for a spot in the bullpen I'm guessing the spot that will be open is the one that McClellan will be vacating.
Cardinals righty Mitchell Boggs.
I fear that McClellan hasn't shown the durability to be a starter and I would hope that Rich Hill gets a fair shot at the rotation because of his experience. Putting Hill in the bullpen as a third lefty would seem to be an indication that the Birds are going to carry eight relievers at most times. Having three lefties (Hill, Reyes and Miller) seems like too many for a six or seven-man pen. Especially since we know that Ryan Franklin can't pitch back to back games too often and that Jason Motte is still earning management's confidence.
