Sheffield surprised by lack of Cards interest

Recently available slugger Gary Sheffield told the New York media that he expected the Cardinals to be calling when he was released by the Tigers last week and that he was interested in playing in St. Louis.

Sheffield said he heard that Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols planned to call him to make a recruiting push. But he quickly signed with the Mets after they showed immediate interest and the call never came.

The former Brewer, Padre, Marlin, Brave, Dodger, Yankee and Tiger could have been a valuable corner outfield bat for the Cardinals, platooning with Chris Duncan and providing a power bat off the bench.

Pujols was intentionally walked on opening day when a wild pitch allowed outfielder Rick Ankiel to move to second base. The Pirates opted to work to cleanup hitter and shortstop Khalil Greene instead and managed to avoid any damage.
