The Phillies are the latest team to check in with Cardinals free agent starter John Smoltz, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
The defending NL champs are looking for help at the back end of their starting rotation. But the 42-year-old pitcher has drawn interest from several clubs that would use him in the rotation, bullpens or both.
The Cardinals could probably use some fifth starter insurance... A pitcher who could also work in the bullpen. But we were led to believe last season that Smoltz's recurring shoulder problems -- specifically tendonitis -- prevented him from working as frequently as he would if he were a bullpenner.
