Marlins make offer to Branyan

The Marlins have made an offer on former Cardinals infielder Russell Branyan, according to Yahoo Sports.

The report doesn't specify terms but says it's a low base salary with a lot of incentives. I wonder what qualifies as "a lot."

Branyan could be a nice choice for the Redbirds as a guy who could push rookie David Freese for the third base job and, if he doesn't win it outright, platoon there or be a nice lefty bat off the bench. But the Cardinals don't have a lot to spend, so it seems like Branyan is an unlikely match.

All things considered, Felipe Lopez is probably the safer bet because he is more versatile and is a switch hitter. Lopez can play second, third, short and the outfield corners while Branyan is a below average defender at first and third.

Lopez doesn't have as much pop in his bat, but Branyan strikes out a lot and hits for low average...
