Rumor Mill: Cardinals tell Tribe "No deal."

ESPN's Peter Gammons reports that the Cardinals had negotiations about super utility player Mark DeRosa. But they ended when the Indians insisted that they wanted either Jason Motte or Chris Perez included in the deal.

I can't blame the Birds front office for that decision. I like DeRosa. But I don't think he's the piece that puts the Cardinals over the top. They need a slugger to protect Albert Pujols more than anything right now. Ryan Ludwicks Friday night grand salami is the only time I can remember this season when the opposing pitcher was made to pay for pitching around the big guy.

I don't think Motte or Perez are untouchable. But if they are flipped it would have to be to fetch a major piece of the puzzle.

As I have said before, I like Matt Holliday. But every day that passes Holliday moves a little closer to free agency... And the amount I would be willing to trade for him as a rental player diminishes.
