The Cardinals sent relief pitcher Luke Gregerson to San Diego as the player to be named later in the Khalil Greene swap.
The 24-year-old hurler had a 3.35 ERA in Class AA Springfield where he pitched 72 innings and averaged more than one strikeout per frame. Worrell won't pitch in 2009. He hurt his elbow and required Tommy John surgery that will put him on the shelf for at least a year.
In an unrelated move, the Cardinals on Tuesday shipped infielder Tyler Greene back to the minor league camp.
Tyler Green was hitting .256 in 43 at bats for the big club. He apparently fell behind Joe Thurston on the depth chart even though Thurston was hitting only .220.
