Ankiel shelved by injury

Former Cardinals pitcher turned outfielder Rick Ankiels is out for at least a week after he sprained his ankle in Royals camp.

Ankiel got a healthy free agent contract to be a starter, so it's extremely unlikely the injury will do any damage to his chances of making the club. But it must be frustrating for Ankiel after injuries derailed each of his last two seasons and likely ended his Cardinals career.

Batting only .214 with a homer and a triple, Ankiel came to camp with a new swing designed to cut down on his strikeouts and give him a better opportunity to hit to all fielders.

In an unrelated move, another former Cardinals pitcher had a bad day in spring training.

Lefty reliever Ron Villone, 40, was cut by the Nationals after only three spring training appearances.
