The Cardinals lack of depth in the starting rotation is already being tested on the first day of spring training.
Pitching prospect Mitchell Boggs reported to camp with tightness in his pitching shoulder. The Redbirds plan to take it easy with the young hurler, who was 9-3 with a 3.54 ERA in Class AAA Memphis and managed a 3-2 record with a 7.41 ERA in six appearances in St. Louis.
Boggs is seventh on the Cardianals pitching depth charts:
But he gets a lot closer to the action if Chris Carpenter, who has graduated to throwing breaking balls, has any detours in his road back to the top of the Cardinals starting rotation following nearly two years on the disabled list.
