Happy 37th birthday to former Cardinals prospect and East St. Louis native DaRond Stovall.
The Birds claimed Stovall, a graduate of Althoff Catholic High School in Belleville, in the fifth round of the 1991 Major League Baseball entry draft. But he never made it to the big leagues with his home town team.
Instead, Stovall was traded in April 1995 to the Montreal Expos as part of a package that brought pitcher Ken Hill back to the Cardinals for a second stint. (After he made his major league debut for St. Louis in 1988, Hill was shipped to Montreal for slugging first baseman Andres Galarraga.) Hill's second stop in St. Louis was a brief one. He was traded in July of 1995 to Cleveland for a package that included third baseman David Bell.
Stovall finally made it to the majors in 1998 and played 62 games in the outfield for Montreal. He hit .205 with two homers, two doubles and a triple in his only big league season
