Cardinals ink utility man Ruben Gotay

In a move that probably will give the Cardinals some bench versatility -- or at least some organizational depth -- but that isn't likely to move a bunch of tickets, the Redbirds have signed journeyman utility man Ruben Gotay to a minor league deal.

Gotay has logged major league time with the Royals (2004-05), Mets (2007) and Braves (2008) before spending all of last season in the minors. He's got a .255 career average with 12 homers in 726 careet at bats.

He'll turn 27 on Christmas Day. Gotay has played second, third and shortstop in the major leagues.
