The Cardinals enjoyed a three-run lead with Chris Carpenter on the hill while the Pirates rallied from three runs down to force extra innings against the Reds.
What could possibly go wrong?
How about everything?
Carpenter, who looked very good through four innings on the mound -- and even better at the plate with a two-out RBI hit to drive in the Cardinals' first run and a solo homer to drive in another -- fell apart in the sixth inning, allowing six runs in the frame. What looked like an important win turned into a devistating 8-6 loss.

Meanwhile the Reds pushed a run across in the 12th inning and hammered another nail firmly into the Redbirds' coffin.
Cardinals Star of Game: Matt Holliday was 3-for-4 at the plate with a homer, two runs scored and three RBIs.
Cardinals Play of the Game: Holliday's homer broke a 1-1 tie and seemed to put the Birds well on their way to victory.
Lowlight: The talking to Colby Rasmus got from Albert Pujols must have worn off. He was 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts Frida night -- including one with two men on and the Cardinals down by two. When he did get on base, he was caught stealing on play on which he got an awful jump.
