Walking wounded

The Cardinals are going to have to make a move soon and put someone on the disabled list.

With the injuries Rick Ankiel suffered from his unfortunate meeting with the left centerfield wall lingering and his availability uncertain, the Birds are playing woefully shorthanded. And don't forget the team is carrying 13 pitchers...They have had to pass on making pinch hitting moves at some points because of a lack of bench depth and at others have had to resort to using pitchers to bat for other pitchers.

It almost worked out Thursday when Adam Wainwright hit a long drive to the wall in left center, almost getting it over the outstretched glove of the Pirates flychaser... But the Cardinals can't continue to pass up opportunities in games that could come back to haunt them later.

Unfortunately, the Redbirds don't have a lot of options at the Class AAA level.

OF Shane Robinson, who caught the eye of fans at spring training, continues to mash the ball in Memphis where he is hitting .345 with a .410 on base percentage and four stolen bases in five tries. But, with a crowded major league outfield, it seems unlikely the Birds would add him to the 40-man roster for a short term call up.

OF/IF Joe Mather, who was a surprise not to make the team out of spring training, is scuffling with a woeful .129 batting average at Memphis while OF Nick Stavinoha is hitting .250. On the infield, 3B David Freese is hitting only .222 since being demoted to Class AAA earlier this season.

The cupboard is looking pretty bare down on the farm... at least as far as position players are concerned. But the Cardinals could sure use a healthy hand or two.
