According to reports out of San Diego, former Cardinals catcher Ted Simmons has told the Padres he won't be back as their bench coach in 2011.
Simmons is looking for a job as a major league manager, and several spots are available.
The Marlins and Mariners were mentioned as a possible landing spots for him during the season. But if I were to put money on where he'll get a job, I'm guessing it's in Milwaukee where the Brewers just fired skipped Ken Macha.
In addition to being a very popular player in Milwaukee following his trade there from the Cardinals, Simmons was a coach for the Brewers after his playing days were over. He's got major league credibility there that should help him regain control of the clubhouse that tuned out Macha.
Simba is a very smart baseball guy and would make a great candidate to replace Tony La Russa should he decide not to come back next season. But I would be shocked if La Russa walks away from the Birds.
