All of those people who bought Matt Holliday shirts and jerseys last year or got them as Christmas presents probably breathed a sigh of relief when the slugging left fielder re-signed with the Cardinals a couple of days ago.
But not so fast...
During the press conference Holliday announced that, while he will continue to wear a Cardinals uniform with the familiar birds on the bat on the front, the back is going to look a little different. He switched numbers from 15, which he wore following his trade to St. Louis, to number 7.
"Jim Edmonds wore 15 and he was pretty popular here, so I wanted to have my own number," Holliday explained about the change. "Plus, Mickey Mantle wore number seven and he was from Oklahoma..."
Holliday, also from Oklahoma, wore number 5 before being traded to St. Louis. He jokingly said he offered to buy it from Albert Pujols but Pujols declined.
