The Reds have placed former Cardinals pitcher Russ Springer on the 15-day disabled list with a stiff hip.
Springer, who joined Cincinnati last month after sitting out the first half of the 2010 season, made two appearances for the Reds before breaking down. He allowed two hits and one run in 1 2/3 of an inning pitched.
The Reds hoped Springer, who had two stints with the Birds -- in 2003 and 2007-08 -- and anothe former Cardinals hurler, Jason Isringhausen, could help them beat St. Louis in the National League Central race. But the Redbirds are getting more production on the mound from a former Cincinnati player, second baseman Aaron Miles.
Miles pitched a scoreless inning of relief last week when the Cardinals were blown out by Houston.
