Cardinals third baseman David Freese is expected to be placed on the disabled list because of continuing problems with his ankle, according to radio reports.
Freese missed several games earlier this month after turning his ankle while running the bases. Apparently it never really got better, which is especially worrisome since it is the same ankle that was injured in a car accident. That injury kept him out of almost the entire 2009 season.
Felipe Lopez, who has seen a lot of time at shortstop because of Brendan Ryan's troubles at the plate, will likely now be pressed into service at the hot corner. That's bad because it's not his best position, because the Cardinals can't afford to be without Freese's bat and because it severly weakens the Redbirds already weak bench.
Tyler Greene, who played well during his first trip to St. Louis earlier this year could get the call up. But if Freese is out an extended period of time, the Cardinals are really going to have to think about making a deal to bolster the infield.
