The Cardinals have tendered contracts to all three of their eligible players, Brendan Ryan, Kyle McClellan and the newest Redbird, Ryan Theriot.
There was some feeling that the team might not offer Ryan a contract, effectively severing ties with their starting shortstop in 2009. But that really made no sense because Ryan should at least have a little bit of trade value. And he might even have more value to the team as a reserve than he would as bait.
I know that Ryan might agitate manager Tony La Russa with his hyperactive personality. But there are worse things a player could bring into the clubhouse. Maybe the wakeup call of Ryan Theriot being brought into the competition will have a positive impact on Ryan. But, at the very least, the Cardinals shouldn't give away such a good defensive player who can do some things at the plate and on the bases for free.
