Here's the breakdown of Jake Westbrook's new contract, according to mlb.com:
He gets $8 million in 2011, $8.5 million in 2012 and there's a mutual $8.5 million option for 2013.
If the Cardinals decline the option but Westbrook picks it up, the hurler gets a $1 million buyout. If Westbrook declines the option, he gets no buyout.
Westbrook wanted a guaranteed third season. As a compromise he was given the option and a full no-trade clause for the entire contract.
So, in reality, Westbrook is guaranteed at least $17.5 million if he doesn't decide to opt out.
