The Cardinals announced Tuesday that minor league pitching instructor Derek Liliquist has been named to replace Marty Mason as bullpen coach.
Lilliquist, who pitched for the Braves, Padres, Indians and Red Sox in the late 80s and 90s, has specialized in perfecting hurlers' mechanics and rehabbing pitchers coming back from injuries.
He beat out several internal candidates including former major league ace Dennis Martinez. There was a lot of sentiment from fans for former catcher Mike Matheny to get the job. But it is unclear if he was ever interested in being a serious candidate.
As a player, Lilliquist was 25-34 with a 4.24 working mostly out of the bullpen.
