For the second year in a row, Adam Wainwright narrowly missed out on Cy Young Award glory.
But I'm sure he's not crying too much about it. He's won the second place prize of $21 million.
Wainwright's contract, signed in 2008, offered a pair of team options for the 2012 and 2013 seasons, the first for $9 million and the second for $12 million. The options automatically vested he finished in the top five of the 2010 or 2011 Cy Young vote.
Although Philadelphia's Roy Halladay was a unanimous winner, sweeping all of the first place votes, Wainwright claimed the vast majority of second place ballots to be the runner up. Colorado's Ubaldo Jiminez was third.
